Lindsey Vonn: Homecoming Date for Lucky 16 Year old Boy

Vail, Colorado high school student Parker McDonald is our hero. For a sixteen-year-old, he really has some cajones, chutzpah, stones, whatever you want to call it. At the last minute, McDonald needed a homecoming date. Globally acclaimed skier Lindsey Vonn just happened to be visiting his school, so McDonald summoned the courage to ask her to the dance, and Vonn said yes!

Before we continue on with our feel good story I must say two things: 1.) Vonn is married, so this story doesn’t have as much of a happy ending, at least for McDonald, as you might think. 2.) If the roles were reversed and a 27-year-old man were going to homecoming with a 16-year-old girl, the media coverage of the event would take a “slightly different tone.”

Chilean Earthquake Impacts Lindsey Vonn Training Session

As you might have heard, there was a earthquake in Chile the other day. It was the same exact magnitude as the quake in Virginia a couple weeks ago, but didn’t receive nearly a fraction of the media coverage because

It even affected the training of Lindsey Vonn.

Here’s what Lindsey Vonn tweeted:

Here’s some video of me training GS in Chile yesterday. http://on.fb.me/7wSUf2 My training has been going well except for the 5.9 earthquake

Five for Fighting: Georgetown Hoyas Brawl Needed these 5 People

The Big East is represented in China at the moment by none other than the Georgetown Hoyas. The supposed goodwill tour recently included a bench clearing brawl. This leaves a black mark for the moment on the university, but as usual John Thompson III has a measured response in not hastily cancelling future contests.

Some more muscle could have assisted the Hoyas in achieving greater success in the melee.

Iron Mike Tyson is a prime example of someone who could have taken care of business on the court with the frenzy. He does have a softer side now as a supposed family man, but he still has to be all kinds of crazy to have that kind of affection for pigeons. If I had that hobby, the last thing in the world that I would be looking to do is broadcast it to the world.

Butler’s Khyle Marshall Added to U19 USA Team Tryouts

Butler Bulldogs forward Khyle Marshall is one of five college basketball players invited to participate in the 2011 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Championship Team training camp, June 17-24 at the U. S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. A total of 21 players will be competing for a spot on the 12-member team that will represent the United States at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship in Latvia.

Marshall, one of the highest rated recruits under Brad Stevens, helped Butler to the 2011 NCAA National Championship game. Marshall was extended an invitation by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee, chaired by Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim.

Interesting aside about Marshall, is that he strongly considered attending Marshall University. So he would have had his name on both the front and back of the jersey during his college career. Try having fun with that old “it’s-not-the-name-on-the-back-of-the-jersey-but-the-name on-the-front-that-matters” platitude with him.

10 Forever Tainted Historic Sports Accomplishments*

barry-bonds

Playing sports at the highest level requires an intense competitive drive in which failure is never an accepted result. Michael Jordan’s desire to win, for example, was unparalleled during his time in the NBA, which is why he never lost an NBA Finals and is unanimously regarded as the greatest basketball player the game has ever seen. It’s what separates the elite ones from the good ones.

Each player or team below achieved greatness — a much-coveted record or championship — but received some unfair help along the way. Of course, how much that help tainted their accomplishments varies; some deserve asterisks, while others ought to be stricken from the record books altogether.

Ultimately, though, it’s the popular opinion of sport fans that determines the athletes’ legacies.

Lindsey Vonn Struggles with Injury; Wins Sportswoman of the Year Award

lindsey_vonn

American skier Lindsey Vonn is experiencing the epitome of good news, bad news today. The head injury she suffered severely held her back at the beginning of the downhill skiing season; as her season is going downhill (pun intended). On the flip side, she won an international sportswoman of the year award.

From USA Today:

Lindsey Vonn is clearly not her normal self. Perhaps more worrying, the Olympic downhill champion isn’t sure when she’ll be fully recovered from her head injury.

Attempting to defend her title, Vonn finished a dismal seventh in the super-G that opened the world championships Tuesday, crossing 0.84 seconds behind Austrian winner Elisabeth Goergl.

Vonn lost time at each checkpoint and became increasingly shaky as she went down. On the bottom half of the icy and shady Kandahar course, the American was uncharacteristically wild and struggled simply to maintain her line.
