Khalil Mack Rise Accurately Predicted by Tony Gonzalez Two Years Ago

khalil-mack-raiders

(UPDATE: Saturday night saw Oakland Raiders Linebacker Khalil Mack win NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Back in August of 2015, The Sports Bank sat down with NFL Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez, and talked quite a bit about the Raiders, including a whole lot of conversation about the Raiders. We decided to re-publish that exclusive with Gonzalez, as he pretty much called the rise of Mack. See the quotes below)

Oakland Raiders AFC Wild Card Game Preview, Prediction

oakland-raiders
It’s quite rare to see a 12-4 team as underdogs to a 9-7 in a NFL playoff game, but that’s life with the Oakland Raiders sans Derek Carr. You saw Carr’s NFL MVP bonafides last week as you saw what Oakland degenerated into without him. Yes, the Houston Texans are favored over the Raiders, and by how much depends on who you do “for novelty purposes only” with.
The house always wins, but some houses are giving the Oakland Raiders +2.5 points while others are all the way up to a touchdown.

Can Connor Cook be the Oakland Raiders Savior?

connor-cook-2016-nfl-mock-draft

In the build-up to the 2016 NFL Draft, the narrative around Michigan State Quarterback Connor Cook paralleled a story line from the Kevin Costner film “Draft Day.”

The media just would not shut up about how Cook wasn’t named a team captain at MSU, and you could almost hear Costner’s character repeatedly asking, as he did in the film about the fictional blue chip prospect, “WHY DIDN’T HIS TEAMMATES COME TO HIS BIRTHDAY PARTY?!”

Oakland Raiders Officially “Back” (Playoff Berth, Seven Pro Bowlers)

oakland-raiders

It’s finally official now- the Oakland Raiders are truly “back.” At 11-3, with a postseason berth clinched, and now six Pro Bowlers, the Silver and Black, for the first time since the 2002 season, have once again “arrived.” Who better to announce the resurgence than the man who led that team to the AFC Championship that season, winning the league MVP honors that fateful season.

“They have been a legitimate contender for a while, said Rich Gannon on his weekly CBS Sports Network talk show this week.

“They have been pretty consistent throughout the course of the season…They’re playing terrific football. A lot of it has to do with the leadership of Jack Del Rio. The message to the football team in the locker room yesterday  really hit home to me.”

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin will coach his final game with the Crimson Tide once their college football playoff run has completed. Kiffin was a serious candidate for the Houston Cougars Head Coaching job, but will instead become the new head man at Florida Atlantic University, Bama Head Coach Nick Saban confirmed.

“FAU has selected someone that’s going to do a great job for them,” Saban said on campus on Monday at a news conference to promote the upcoming Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Charles Woodson Next “A Football Life,” Raiders, Michigan, Packers Fans Rejoice

charles-woodson

We poked a lot of fun at NFL icon Charles Woodson in the preseason when he picked the Oakland Raiders to win the Super Bowl, and Khalil Mack to win the MVP back in the preseason.

His picks look more astute and insightful now don’t they? It wasn’t just blatant HOMERISM by Woodson for his former teammates last season as he began his career as a NFL Analyst for ESPN. While we still have plenty of issues with a lot of the Charles Woodson punditry body of work, we’re still very very excited about NFL Network’s Charles Woodson: A Football Life.

Derek Carr, Khalil Mack and the Oakland Raiders Have Arrived

derek-carr

Those who went out on a limb this preseason and said Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders would be dominant this year have looked like sooth sayers. They have seen those prognostications realized. We Actually kind of saw this coming last preseason. We had a couple exclusive conversations in the  summer of 2015, with Jim Nantz and Tony Gonzalez, about the potential of the Raiders to be competitive last season.

Both Nantz and Gonzalez conveyed some optimism for Derek Carr and company. Gonzalez was really very high on Khalil Mack.

Editor’s note: this feature on Josh Booty and LSU quarterbacks is by guest contributor Crissy Froyd

Over the years, LSU has produced some incredible athletes who have achieved exceptional NFL careers.

However, there’s one particular position the Tigers have always struggled with- quarterback. After all, it’s been 43 years since Bert Jones, the last LSU QB to truly have a successful career in the NFL, was drafted into the league in 1973.

Derek Carr: Oakland Raiders Quarterback a NFL MVP Favorite

derek-carr

“When you have that kind of confidence in your quarterback, it changes the dynamics on your squad,” said NFL Network Analyst Bucky Brooks about Derek Carr. Brooks made the comment after watching Carr lead the Raiders to a comeback victory over the defending NFC Champion Carolina Panthers despite a dislocated pinkie finger on his throwing hand.

Yes, on his throwing hand.  Carr the’s primary reason that the Oakland Raiders stand tall at the top of the AFC playoff picture right now.

As we head into the fourth quarter of the season, Oaktown is right there with the New England Patriots in the battle for AFC supremacy and playoff home field supremacy.

Oakland Raiders vs New England Patriots New Media Obsession

oakland-raiders

Are you ready to re-fight and replay the infamous “Tuck Rule Game?” Otherwise known as the Snow Bowl or the Snow Job, the 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff game was played on January 19, 2002 and it was the final game in the history of Foxboro Stadium. The New England Patriots beat the Oakland Raiders 16-13 in one of the most controversial games of all time.

The Pats then went on to win the Super Bowl that season and into Gillette Stadium the next year. The Oakland Raiders won the AFC the very next season, then fell off the map until just this season.
