The 2016 college basketball tournament tips off this week. Here is a pre-season NCAA Tournament Bracketology. You will notice on the Bracket Matrix grades that The Sports Bank’s bracketology has been more accurate than ESPN’s Joe Lunardi five of the past six years. [Read more…]Follow paulmbanks
As expected, year one of the Steve Wojciehowski era was rough for the transitioning Marquette basketball program as they finished tied for last place in the Big East. Wojo has hit the recruiting trail hard though and brings a top ten class to Milwaukee this season which is part of the reason Marquette is expected to have a bounce back year. Comcast SportsNet’s Jen Lada put the smack down on a Marquette message board user who was critical of her hosting role at a Marquette coaches luncheon in Chicago. Like the great Woody Paige told me at the Poynter Institute of Journalism in 2007, “message boards are like mushrooms, they grow in dark places.”
MU Scoop is actually one of the better ones out that you’ll find out there. And for me to praise MU Scoop really says something, since I enjoy college sports message boards as much as I enjoy paying utility bills. I am very glad however that a Marquette alum close to The Sports Bank sent me this thread because it’s quite interesting.Follow paulmbanks
The 2014-15 season is going to be a struggle for the Marquette Golden Eagles and first year head coach, Steve Wojciechowski. Likely even more of a struggle than a year ago when MU missed out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.
It appears as if next season will only be a bump in the road though as Wojo and his staff have hit the recruiting trail hard, already landing three top 100 commitments for the 2015 class including 6’5 wing Haanif Cheatham who last week chose Marquette over Georgetown and California. Now that the 2014 NBA Draft is in the books, draft nets like myself can look ahead to next year’s class. Here is The Sports Bank’s extremely premature 2015 NBA Mock Draft where team needs and outstanding trades have NOT been taken into account. Click on the player’s name for an in-depth draft profile. By the way, The Sports Bank had the most accurate NBA Mock Draft in both 2011 and 2012 along with the second most accurate mock in 2013.Follow paulmbanks

Long-time Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski was introduced as the new Marquette head basketball coach on Tuesday. The first-time head coach has helped recruit some of the top talent in the country for the past decade but now faces a new challenge at Marquette because let’s be honest; Duke recruits itself and Marquette is not Duke.
At the McDonald’s All-American Game Media Day on Tuesday, I spoke with several players who Wojo helped recruit and they had nothing but positive things to say about how Wojciechowski gets after it on the recruiting trail.Follow paulmbanks
Bruce Weber is well know for talking LOUDLY at press conferences; even when there is a microphone, and thus no need for AMPLIFYING HIS VOICE.
It’s something all college basketball coaches do: a lot of screaming. Well Bruce Weber is making a lot of noise right now, and he hasn’t even said a word. There’s a whole lot of noise building towards the idea of Weber leaving Kansas State to take the Marquette vacancy.
(UPDATE: With the elimination of Tennessee, Cuonzo Martin emerges as another leading candidate for the MU job)Follow paulmbanks
UPDATE 3-30-14: Bruce Weber named a leading candidate by both the Chicago Sun-Times and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
Still nothing definitive on Bruce Weber leaving Kansas State to become the Head Coach at Marquette. Here’s what we reported Monday morning, and analyzed why and why not Bruce Weber to MU would make sense. Nothing’s changed since then, other than what seems like the entire Milwaukee media, at least the whole television contingent, seriously jumping the gun on Shaka Smart to MU rumors.
All based off one tweet from a student television station producer. Yes, that’s actually exactly what happened. No Shaka, but Ben Howland has emerged as possibly the leading candidate.Follow paulmbanks
