Melvin Gordon is the future for the Wisconsin Badgers

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the most impressive member of the Wisconsin Badgers football team this spring was a running back.

However, it’s slightly shocking that it wasn’t the 2011 Heisman Finalist Montee Ball or even the 2010 Big Ten Freshman of the Year James White, but rather a young red-shirt freshman named Melvin Gordon.

If you’re Head Coach Bret Bielema, is it time to find room for Gordon in a crowded backfield or let him simmer and learn behind the experienced Ball and White?

Reviewing college football fan sites: Northwestern blogs

NU-football

Modern media publications review movies, television shows and rock albums, but no one reviews blogs, the question is why? Obviously, it’s easy to review static mass media items that aren’t changing once they initially are produced much more easily than the dynamic and the evolving world of blogs.

Of course, some aspects of certain blogs are pretty consistent, and with regular features running all the time, there is enough remaining the same so that one can accurately critique. Obviously, to do a feature like this, the number of blogs out there must be small, and the market size niche- like we have with Northwestern.

Illini QB Nathan Scheelhaase: should he keep his job?

scheelhaase

In the 2012 Illini spring game, they seemed to have the same exact issue that they have during the final seven games of 2011- throwing the ball forward.

Perhaps part of the spring scrimmage m.o. was to hold back that part of the offense, but then again it’s a preseason exhibition why wouldn’t you let it fly?
Unless it’s simply because you can’t?

And the statistics for starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase were extremely putrid that rainy Saturday, continuing the regression that she showed the final seven games of 2011.

Kain Colter to Kyle Prater: Big 10′s next big pass-catch combo?

kain-colter

What a difference a year makes for Northwestern QB Kain Colter. Last season the backup QB to Dan Persa found himself making the stat sheet as a triple threat. You had to look in three areas of the box score: rushing, passing and receiving, to see the entire scope of his impact on the game.

This year, the starting signal caller job is all Colter’s and his main weapon will be Kyle Prater (if the NCAA waiver goes through). A lot of things have to go right in Evanston, but if they do, NU will have one of the best pitch and catch combos in the Big Ten, and the Wildcats offense could make some noise this college football season.

Convicted sex offender Buckeyes fan exposed by Ohio St. blog

waugh

On Friday, THE Ohio State University sent out a letter via it’s school paper The Lantern warning athletes about a convicted repeat child sex offender, and to watch who they associate with in social media.

Since then, the pervert in question Charles Eric Waugh, has violated his probation (which could very likely lead to jail this time) and the #4 rated recruit in Pennsylvania de-committed from OSU (and possibly could enroll at Notre Dame) when this sleazebag was exposed.

And the reporting that led to this creep’s downfall? Not from ESPN or the MSM, but a Buckeyes blog!

Mike McQueary to sue Penn State, seek whistleblower status

mike-mcqueary

Former Penn State wide receivers coach Mike McQueary is filing a whistleblower lawsuit against Penn State. The paperwork was filed today on behalf of his lawyer Eliot Strokoff. That is his name- how unfortunate that we are not joking. You have to admit that’s funny.

Genuinely funny, not dark humor like how Jerry Sandusky is being represented by a man who impregnated a minor who was about a third his age.

A writ of summons for a civil case was filed in county court today; giving Penn State University notice that he’s suing them.

New 2012 Illini Football slogan unveiled

illini-t-shirt

Illinois football coach Tim Beckman revealed the 2012 Illinois “Loyal-Tee” shirt design Tuesday in front of Foellinger Auditorium in Champaign.

The winning design, featured on the front of the shirt, was voted on by thousands of Illini fans out of four designs based on the winning fan-submitted slogan, “A New Era BECKons.”

Get it? Cuz of Tim Beckman, beckons…”STEAKS AND CAKES!”

“LASAGNA PANS!”

Blackhawks Patrick Kane celebrating Cinco de Mayo at Univ. of Wisconsin (photos)

patrick kane

The Chicago Blackhawks Patrick Kane is at it again. Or more likely, he’s been at it, but this time he’s been shutterbugged and published.  This is courtesy of Terez Owens. We have some fun pics for you. From the Terez Owens “tipster” comes this:

“I go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and we had our biggest party of the spring this weekend called ‘Mifflin.’ Patrick Kane was here and was the drunkest person in Madison all day Saturday.

“Here is a pic of him passed out at our best bar, the Kollege Klub.”

For Kane’s (and the rest of the Blackhawks shirtless limo ride partying photos go here

Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball arrested for trespassing

montee-ball-heisman

Montee Ball returned to the Wisconsin Badgers for his senior season to further build on his already stellar legacy. Last season, Ball was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy as he tied Barry Sanders for the most touchdowns in NCAA single season history.

Early this morning however, Ball did something that won’t exactly help his legacy. This incident will only lead to notoriety, not fame.

Ball attended the Mifflin Street Block Party where he was on the wrong porch, and apparently just wouldn’t leave. He was arrested for trespassing.

Wisconsin’s Travis Frederick: smartest man in college football?

travis-frederick

Last weekend in the NFL Draft, Wisconsin Badgers offensive linemen Peter Konz and Kevin Zeitler were taken in the first two rounds. Ricky Wagner should be a first round pick in 2013. In 2011, Gabe Carimi, John Mofitt, tight Lance Kendricks, and another guy who didn’t even start during his college football days in Madison were all drafted.

In short, if you make the starting five up front in Camp Randall, and you grasp the pro style offense of the Badgers, you’ll probably get your chance to in the NFL after your senior year. It’s an OL factory for the professional ranks. Another name you can count among them is guard/center Travis Frederick, an incoming junior.

But what makes Frederick so special is that he has the potential to have a very bright future even without football.

He may well be the smartest guy in not just the Big Ten, but all of college football.

Ohio St. Athletes warned of Pedophile Buckeyes superfan

waugh

Maybe sex offender with multiple convictions Charles Eric Waugh would fit in better at Penn State? The Ohio State Buckeyes fan has a Twitter page had a Twitter page which has since been deleted, voicing his proud allegiance to OSU, but considering his criminal history of possessing child pornography, maybe he should be a Nittany Lions fan.

Then again, I’ve met plenty of creepy Buckeye fans too. Penn State University may be the lowest form of life in the Big Ten, but OSU isn’t that all far behind. Making fun of the sliminess of both fan bases is just too easy.

Illini add big man in transfer Sam McLaurin

sam-mclaurin

New University of Illinois head coach John Groce got his second recruit today. The Illini announced today Coastal Carolina’s Sam McLaurin has signed a tender of financial aid and will transfer to Illinois for his final season of eligibility upon earning his bachelor’s degree in May.

Because he will be enrolled as a graduate student at Illinois majoring in a major that Coastal Carolina does not have, he will be eligible to compete immediately during the 2012-13 season under the NCAA one-time transfer exception. He fills a huge need in frontcourt that lacked depth lat season. And now with the departure of Meyers Leonard to the NBA, it truly is in need of another big.
