Take that and Shove it, Yankees!Â
10,000 wins. That’s right, the “lovable loser†Cubs have been a more winning team than you have, Steinbrenner! On April 23, 2008, the Chicago Cubs achieved an amazing record.Â
The Cubs became the 2nd winningest team in Baseball history. And on April 30th, The Cubs broke a franchise record 17 wins in April. 17 wins…..Hooooooollly Crap!  (Then again, when you have 6 games against Pittsburgh in a month…..)
After a slow first couple of games, the Cubbies have been nearly unbeatable. Late in the month, they slowed, losing 4 of 5. Performances like Geovany Soto’s 8 consecutive whiffs made the Cubs look like an early flash in the pan. Until last night. Maybe it was Mark Cuban, in town to scout out his next acquisition (let’s all hold hands and pray for Baseball’s collective wisdom to HELP Mark Cuban buy the Cubs). Maybe it was Soto, scared to keep his position (after 8 consecutive whiffs), who came out of nowhere to belt not just one but two homers, scoring 3 runs each time!Â
If you did the math, I wonder how much Soto got paid for each time he fanned? Let’s see … $401,000 salary, divided by say 500+ at bats a year if he starts all season…that comes to about $800 per whiff, or $6,400 to blow it 8 times in a row. Hell, that’s more than most Cubs fans make in a Month! Hey Lou…Put me in for 8 at bats. I’ll strike out for ½ of what Soto is charging you, and I’d be far more entertaining for the fans.  Well, the Cubs showed Cuban why he needs to buy the team, even though the big baby left after the 5th inning last night. Bring a jacket to Cubs games in April, Mark – everyone knows it’s friggin’ cold in Wrigley Field, or whatever you’ll next name it (think Piggly Wiggly). But our Cubbies took out their bats and just clubbed the Brewers into submission, like a baby seal.
On a side note, Lou may not be a Fulbright Scholar, but at least he’s not stupid, Dammit!

What a damn shame that the Cards won 18 in April….then again, they played Dusty’s Reds a few times. I’ll end the week’s rant with a quote from the Cubs website, which shows that Baseball really sucked 100 years ago when the Cubs last won the World Series. Looks like a school for wayward blind pregnant girls would have given the Cubs a tough series back in the day. I was just a baby, so I slept through most of the games, when I wasn’t screaming at the umps. You can find the original article by Carrie Muskat here
“Harry Steinfeldt was the only Cubs regular batting over .300 — hitting .310 with a club-high 13 hits. Johnny Evers led the Cubs with nine runs scored and five stolen bases. The Cubs leader in home runs? No one. The team ended the first month without a long ball. The 1908 Cubs’ first homer would not occur until May 25, in the 28th game of the season. Schulte notched the first of the year off the Giants’ Christy Mathewson at the Cubs’ home West Side Grounds. But that’s a highlight for next month’s recap.
Â
In April 1908, ground was broken in Philadelphia for Shibe Park, which would be the home of the Philadelphia Athletics from 1909-54, and the Phillies from 1938-70. The Garfield Park Conservatory opened that month in Chicago. Henry Chadwick, baseball historian and journalist referred to as the “Father of Baseball,” died in Brooklyn at the age of 83. And on April 27, the opening ceremonies of the fourth modern olympic games were held in London.â€
Did you catch that? In 1908, the Cubs first homer occurred on MAY 25TH????? And the best hitter had a club “high†13 hits? But the Cubs had a secret strategy that year.  They’d bore the other team to death. Make the outfielders fall asleep. Let’s hope Lou has a better plan for 2008. Congrats Cubbies on 10,000 wins and a franchise record 17 in April.

Bore the other team to death? its looks like my Sox are trying to do that right now. watching their offense (or lack thereof) is a snooze fest right now. But this strategy isnt bringing them any wins
I’ve never seen a legal disclaimer like that on YouTube before. I can hear and see the black helicopters swooping in to get me now. When the Federales break into my home to take me away, I’ll just give up the person who posted it on YouTube to save my own skin.
