nicklas-lidstrom

Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom retired today after 20 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, ending one of the best blue-liner careers in hockey history.

The four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner as the league’s best defenseman made a very emotional announcement as he said goodbye to the NHL.

Sarah Chalke’s new show about moving in with your parents (photos)

sarah-chalke

Sarah Chalke is one of the most underrated actress/models around. She’s more than just sneaky hot. She’s scorching and it kind of goes unnoticed. She’s got a new tv show starting up next fall season. From the title, it sounds like the type of material that resonates in today’s economic times. A lot of college students and recent college graduates can relate. For our Sarah Chalke photos

NBA Playoffs: Refs giving Miami ‘stars’ all (well most) of the calls

LeBron James

I don’t like to put anything on anyone or anything in particular, especially if that any one or thing has no business in deciding the outcome of a basketball game, but I think now everyone has the right to speculate on what is really going on between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics. [Read more…]

Hawk Harrelson’s EPIC anti-umpire rant today (video)

hawk-harrelson

You know what a ridiculous homer and quirky public speaker Chicago White Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson is (see here). That’s not news. And you know how much vitriol he has for the umpires- this isn’t a breaking development either. (See this Joe West rant)

But today, he truly out-did himself in both categories. What happened today versus the Tampa Bay Rays is one of the most entertaining moments of his career. And truly emblematic of who he is.

Here’s a written synopsis of the gist of the rant via Awful Announcing. And then the video itself. As you’ll see it was pretty intense:

Bar Refaeli was voted #1 on Maxim Magazine’s Hot 100 list for 2012.

The Israeli stunner was destined for modeling and hotness glory as her mother, Tzipi Levine, was a successful model in the 1970s.

2012 NBA Draft Lottery: Who needs #1 pick most?

nba draft lottery

If you subscribe to the conspiracy theory of the NBA Draft Lottery; either the Charlotte Bobcats, Brooklyn Nets, or New Orleans Hornets will win the number one overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.  All three franchises sorely need a boost which expected top overall prospect, Anthony Davis of Kentucky will certainly provide to whichever franchise selects him.

The ping pong balls will sort themselves out Wednesday night so let’s take a look at each team’s odds and what landing the #1 pick (aka Davis) would mean for their franchise.  Go here for The Sports Bank’s 2012 NBA Mock Draft.

NBA Playoffs: Referees, put your whistles in your pocket

Dan Crawford

This is the second time now that I have had to write about the referees in the playoffs. And again, it’s about their lack of judgment during a game. What happened last night was an absolute atrocity. During Game 1 between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, Boston was called for three (yes, I said “three”) technical fouls in the second quarter. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and head coach Doc Rivers were called for technical fouls. And all these techs have something in common: it was completely unnecessary.

Notre Dame getting a lot of preseason accolades again

manti-te'o

As usual, there’s a lot of hype and anticipation heading into next college football season regarding Notre Dame. It’s not like last season where gridiron experts are projecting them into a BCS bowl, instead it’s more about their schedule (how tough it is) and how NFL ready some of their talent is.

Especially keep an eye on linebacker Manti Te’o and tight end Tyler Eifert. And circle the dates with USC and Oklahoma.

Athlon’s college football annual will hit newsstands soon and Te’o will be on the cover of the national edition. Here are some of the many other mentions where ND gets national love from Athlon:
