Nothing Cheesy About Favre Drama
NFL Teams Begin to Salivate as Brett Favre Asks for His Release
Â
“…your starting quarterback for your 2008 Chicago Bears #4, Brett Farve.â€
Â
By the SoxmanÂ
How many Chicago fans raised their eyebrows in curiosity and immediately began burning their “Farve Fudge Packer†shirts, while going to NFL.com and thought about ordering a custom Farve Bears jersey?
Â
How many Packers fans just awoke from a bad nightmare in a pool of sweat?
Â
Well football fans, I have news for you. It could happen. The same dream could occur for the Baltimore Ravens, the Minnesota Vikings, or even Favre’s first NFL team, the Atlanta Falcons. There have even been rumblings of Favre going to Miami (it’s ok if Will Smith’s song just started playing in your head). In another move in an intense game of chess, Brett Favre asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team today. This occurred apparently being told his desire to return to the Packers wasn’t welcomed news by Green Bay management.
Â
Like Rocky Balboa, Favre still has some unfinished business burning inside of him, a gladiator’s passionate itch that can only be scratched by again entering the 100-yard arena of battle. If he was just gauging interest before, the Packers’ quick dismissal of his request appears to have awoken the giant inside of him. After all, Favre loves to prove people wrong. According to ESPN today, the team said it would do “what’s right†in response to Favre’s request. “Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms,†the team’s statement said.
Â
“We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.â€
Favre’s next “Balboa-like move†will be to petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to be reinstated, at which point he would return to the team’s active roster. While it is somewhat of a quagmire to approve the return, Goodell would be foolish to deny he request. The next move would come from the Packers. Judging from the buzz that has been generated by the request, they could try and trade Favre to another team, rather than just release him. If this were the case, he surely would not be NFC bound. They could also just release him. The Packers already have committed to Aaron Rodgers, a first-round pick in 2005 who has been sitting behind Favre for his first three seasons in the NFL. Otherwise, Favre would already be putting on the green and yellow again.
Packer fans would likely not forgive the team for turning their back on “Wisconsin’s son.â€Â They would likely direct their angst towards Aaron Rodgers, who already has rubbed fans the wrong way by saying “he could care less what the fans think about him.â€
Â
While one could understand the Packers’ stance, they were one win away from a Super Bowl appearance last season with Favre at QB…in a year they were supposed to be re-building and went through a revolving door of running backs.Â
Â

So why would a team want to sign a 38-year old QB? Because he’s Brett Favre. Grossman, Orton, or Favre? The decision is easy. It may not be that easy for Favre, who will likely look for the best opportunity to win now, and a team with a strong pass-protecting offensive line. Favre is the only three-time MVP (1995-97) in NFL history and has led the Packers to two Super Bowls: a victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI and a loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII. His records include: most career NFL touchdown passes (442), most career NFL passing yards (61,655), most career pass completions (5,377), most career pass attempts (8,758), most career NFL interceptions (288), most consecutive starts among NFL quarterbacks (253; 275 total starts including playoffs), and most career victories as a starting quarterback (160). He’s also durable, the Cal Ripken of Football if you will. Since the fourth game of 1992 NFL season, he has started every game for the Packers.
Â
Go ahead Brett, release what still burns inside you. This writer supports you 100%. Will Favre play again? Maybe. Even if he doesn’t, it makes for great off-season NFL drama, and gives sports junkies craving a football fix, something to fantasize about, other than winning a date with Sarah Spain to the 2009 Super Bowl.

I cant stand the retire-dont retire-maybe retire-reitre again-comeback-retire again crap that he’s doing. Just like I hated it when Michael Jordan and Roger Clemens did it. Make up your mind. be a man about your decisions. give us some finality!
I want to vomit… violently… lots of suspicious shit going on with both sides and they each look really, really, REALLY bad with how this is all playing out…
In today’s day and age, it would be said to not see at least one superstar play out his entire career (or majority of it), with the team where he earned all of his fame an fortune.
agreed. Joe Montana as a Cheif doesnt count. neither does MJ as a Wizard
I’m amazed at so many of the GB fans throwing Favre under the bus.. I realize what he’s doing is putting HUGE pressure on the organization as training camp nears. But still some people are not willing to take back the QB that led you to the NFC championship game and put the ball in the hands of an unproven QB who has how many snaps? Rodgers won’t be a bad QB but I just don’t see why some people are hating on Favre so much… I hope he ends up with a different team. Baltimore would probably be the best fit.
UPDATE: ESPN reports this morning that less than two weeks after Farve announced his retirement, he told the Packers he had a change of heart and wanted to return. The Packers accepted it, and prepared to fly down to MS to discuss it with him, only to be told days later that Farve AGAIN changed his mind and wanted to stay retired. If this is true, then I would have to give the Packers owners more credit. That is just nuts.
UPDATE II: ESPN also reported that the Packers have given Farve two choices: Stay retired or return and be a back-up to Aaron Rogers. They will not release him and they will not trade him.
As a lifelong Packer fan, I must admit this whole situation is sad. What’s worse however, is that I had to search the internet to find the BEST article written on the subject is from a Bears fan who actually looks more like a White Sox fan. Excellent article including the updates, even if you are from Chicago. Please don’t let #4 end up a Bear. Go Brewers!
I am also a huge Packers fan…I blame both parties on this matter..I think this could have been avoided..Put Ted, Mike, and Brett in a room and don’t leave until they figure out something..
I see where Brett is coming from a little, because I play Flag Football in the fall and I was going to retire in March, but I know I am going to come back because I am a force to be wrecking with..In the playoffs last year i threw for five touch downs in one game. I am a LEGEND!!! MVP IN FLAG FOOTBALL.

Yes, “Bleeding Cheese” welcome to the club. good to have you here. And please keep posting early and posting often.
On Fox yesterday Brett said the Packers don’t want him anymore, while the Packers have said that no team has contacted them to ask about a trade. The drama continues. Thanks again for the great writing. I must admit, I love this site.
One more thing. Who in the heck is Sarah Spain?
Cheese- You are correct regarding the news on Brett. This may be at a stand-still for a while. I’m sure a number of teams including the Bears would be intersted in Favre but they know the Packers would NEVER trade him within their division. Additionally, the $30+ million remaining on his contract is likely to scare folks away.
Sarah Spain is a writer for the Sportsbank. As a female reporter, she has more insight on “all that is sports” in her little finger than most men have in their entire body. She’s also super smart– Soxman does not need to comment on her beauty..just look at her picture.

moe when you retire…dont change your mind about it 27 times. When you retire, be decisive about it
The drama increases as the Packers filed a complaint with the NFL claiming the Vikings are illegally talking to Brett Favre about becoming a free agent. Favre admits he discussed his situation with the Vikings O-Line Coach but only as a friend not from a contract perspective.
If the Vikings are found guilty they could lose a draft pick next season or face fines.
This is getting to be a mess. At this point Favre should just show up to camp if he wants to play and then win the job from Aaron Rogers.
Jason Moe:
It’s funny that you bring flag football up because I made the suggestion that Favre should play flag football instead and lead them to victory. However, if you’re having the same retirement issues as Favre, maybe it’s not such a good suggestion after all. lol
General Comment:
The thought of having Favre play for the Bears is sickening to me. The last thing I want is a bunch of cheeseheads infecting Soldiers Field!
sorry i missed the party–thanks for all the kind words, Soxman. : )
No problem Sarah. The party light is always on for you.
